Yeosu World Island Fair from Busan: Buses, Costs and a 2-Day Plan (2026)

"Nothing to see" (볼거리 없다). That's an online comment quoted in a September 13 on-the-ground feature by the Korean daily Aju Business Daily, and it was aimed at the World Island Fair Yeosu, barely a week after opening. The reporter went in person that weekend and came back with a different verdict: the site is already changing, and it isn't the empty venue you see in the videos.

I wasn't standing in Dolsan for this one. I was in Taipei, copying down the official site's transport page, its ticket page, and the Yeosu timetables from two Busan bus terminals, one table at a time. I wanted to answer one question: if you're already flying into Busan, is it worth heading two days west for an expo with such split reviews?

Here's my answer up front. For one or two people, taking the bus yourself from Busan's Sasang terminal is the best deal, with transport, admission and the cable car adding up to about ₩77,600 (about US$58). A tour only makes sense if you also want Suncheon Bay and can round up five people.

Leaving Busan: 10 Buses a Day from Sasang, Only 4 from Nopo

There are two terminals in Busan with buses to Yeosu. The difference isn't the fare, it's how often they run. The times and fares below come from timetable pages compiled from Korea's public data portal (Sasang data updated September 6, the central terminal September 7), for one adult on a weekday.

Both bus routes stop at Yeosu Bus Terminal. I'd pick the Sasang route without thinking twice, and the reason is simple: with 4 buses a day, missing one means waiting two or three hours, while with 10 there's always another one coming. The return works the same way. Yeosu to Sasang has 10 buses a day, the last at 20:00, while Yeosu to Nopo has only 5, the last at 18:40.

The KTX row is for anyone coming down from Seoul. On the expo's official train timetable, Train 509 leaves Yongsan at 09:45 and reaches Yeosu Expo Station at 12:58, every day. I couldn't find an official fare I'd trust enough to quote, so check Korail directly before you buy.

Once You're in Yeosu: The Shuttle Beats a Taxi

The fair's Main Venue is in the Jinmo District of Dolsan, not at the old expo grounds next to Yeosu Expo Station. This trips people up the first time they read the official site, because the station is named after the expo, while those old grounds, EXPO Ocean Park, are only one of the sub-venues this time.

The official shuttle page lays it out clearly: buses run 09:00 to 22:00 on 11 routes. If you're arriving by bus from Busan, two of them matter most.

Route ④ starts at Jinnam Stadium, stops at Yeosu Bus Terminal, and goes straight to the Main Venue, every 7 to 30 minutes. The bus from Busan stops at that same terminal, so there's no extra leg to find the shuttle stop.

Route ① runs directly from Yeosu Expo Station to the Main Venue every 3 to 8 minutes, the most frequent of all the routes.

On top of that, city buses to the Dolsan area and the Main Venue are free for the whole fair, and tapping a transit card charges ₩0. The official site also notes that because Gangnamhaean-ro now runs one-way, every bus route toward Dolsan has been rerouted, so don't copy an old bus guide.

Traveling on my own, what I care about most is getting back at night. The Main Venue closes at 21:00 and the shuttles run until 22:00, and that one-hour gap is just enough that you don't have to rush. It's also what decides whether to stay near Expo Station or near the bus terminal. Route ① runs so often that you spend the least time waiting for a ride back to your hotel at night, while Route ④ runs less often but means you're already at the terminal for the bus back to Busan the next day. Driving into Dolsan? Even the Official Site Says Don't

The official transport page says it plainly: on weekends and holidays, driving in and out of the venue can take 1 to 2 hours or more, and some roads in Dolsan are a single lane. If you really want to drive in Jeollanam-do, Klook has a car rental page with pickup and drop-off at Yeosu Airport, but I'd save the car for your Suncheon or countryside day. On fair day, park at one of the temporary lots on the edge of the city and switch to the free shuttle.

₩15,000 Ticket or ₩8,000 Night Ticket? It Depends on Which Bus You Catch

According to the official ticket page, a regular adult ticket is ₩15,000 (about US$11), youth ₩9,000 (US$7), children ₩6,000 (US$4), and kids 6 and under get in free. All conversions in this article use mid-market exchange rates from September 15, 2026.

The adult night ticket is ₩8,000 (US$6), with entry from 17:00. Entry to the Main Venue runs 10:00 to 20:00, the ticket office is open 09:30 to 20:00, and the venue stays open until 21:00. In other words, a night ticket gives you three to four hours at most.

At first I considered taking the 15:15 bus from Sasang, arriving in Yeosu at 17:42, and saving ₩7,000 with a night ticket. The math didn't work: I'd save about US$5 and throw away a whole afternoon, and the sub-venues (Gaedo, Geumodo and EXPO Ocean Park) only stay open until 18:00, so a night ticket can't reach them at all. On a first visit, buy the regular ticket. The official site says you can get a stamp at the exit and come back in, so stepping out for a meal doesn't waste anything.

You can buy tickets on site, and the official site also links to online sales on NOL World (Interpark), which has English and Japanese versions. If you're going alone and don't speak much Korean, don't worry. The official foreign-language services page says the main information center and ticket offices have tablets for live translation, and signs around the venue have QR codes that open a chatbot.

The Mood in the First Two Weeks: Small Crowds, Split Reviews

Numbers first. According to a September 7 report in Herald Business, 25,417 people came on opening day, September 5, and the first weekend drew 35,668 across two days. The organizers are aiming for 3 million visits over 61 days, which works out to nearly 50,000 a day.

That gap is the backdrop to the "nothing to see" comment. The same report said there were almost no foreign visitors on site beyond people from the participating countries. Aju Business Daily noted that JTBC, after the opening, reported that the hands-on content on the Theme Islands, including Future Island, fell short of expectations. It also flagged problems with the Gaedo sub-venue and the ferries from Gukdong Port, and cited on-site criticism that things like the future mobility experience and the Gaedo campground weren't ready.

But what the Aju Business Daily reporter saw on the weekend of September 13 was a different story: a 360-degree LED media wall on the Theme Islands, Marine Ecology Island with sea creatures made from waste plus a digital aquarium, a slide and ball pit on Treasure Island, and concerts and cooking shows on the weekend.

Here's my own take. If you're expecting a full-scale world expo, you'll probably be disappointed. If you're traveling solo and want somewhere with no lines, shows at night and the sea right there, small crowds are actually a plus. As for the two island sub-venues, I'd wait for reviews after October before deciding whether they're worth a dedicated ferry trip.

Two Days on Your Own: How I'd Split It

Day 1: take the 08:40 Deluxe bus from Sasang, arriving at Yeosu Bus Terminal at 11:07. Walk out, catch the Route ④ shuttle to the Main Venue, and have lunch in the venue's food and market area, since the official site says outside food and alcohol are restricted inside.

Spend the afternoon on the Theme Islands (Marine Ecology Island, Future Island and the rest), and save early evening for the outdoor areas and stages. Be inside before 20:00, because that's last entry, and if you step out, you need to be back in before then too. After closing at 21:00, take the shuttle out and head back to your hotel.

Day 2: head for the Yeosu Marine Cable Car at 09:30. According to the cable car's official fare page, a round trip in a General Cabin is ₩17,000 (about US$13) for an adult, and the glass-floored Crystal Cabin is ₩24,000 (US$18) round trip. On the day I checked, the official homepage listed operating hours of 09:30 to 21:30. The homepage also posts its regular safety inspection days, and in September alone there are two days when it doesn't start running until 2 p.m., so check before you go.

After the cable car, go back to Yeosu Bus Terminal and take the 13:30 Deluxe bus, arriving at Sasang at 16:03. I couldn't find reliable information on how long it takes to get from the cable car station to the bus terminal, so if I were planning this myself I'd leave at least an hour and a half of buffer. I'd rather get there early and sit in the terminal.

With this plan, the fixed costs for the two days are: round-trip bus ₩45,600 (US$34), a regular fair ticket ₩15,000 (US$11), and a General Cabin on the cable car ₩17,000 (US$13), for a total of ₩77,600, about US$58. Accommodation and food are extra, because everyone's choices vary too much for me to guess for you.

Klook's Yeosu and Suncheon 2-Day Tour: Reading the Itinerary Changed My Mind

My first thought was that going to Yeosu alone, a tour would be the easiest option: transport, hotel and cable car all included, with the fair thrown in.

I clicked into this Klook Yeosu and Suncheon 2-day tour and read it day by day, and I found three things. Each one made me rework my advice.

First, the itinerary doesn't include the Island Fair at all. Day 1 is Keunkkeut Lighthouse (큰끝등대), Hyangiram Hermitage, the Dolsan station of the Marine Cable Car, and dinner, with a night at the Venezia Hotel in Yeosu. Day 2 is sunrise, two hours of free time at Naganeupseong Folk Village, the reed fields of Suncheon Bay, and then the return.

Second, it doesn't start or end in Busan. The option I read meets at Yeosu Expo Station at 10:30 and finishes at Suncheon Station, listed as 15:00. The earliest bus from Busan, at 07:30, only reaches Yeosu Bus Terminal at 09:57, and you'd still have to get over to Expo Station. That's too tight. Realistically, you'd have to spend the night before in Yeosu, which turns a two-day trip into three days and two nights.

Third, the minimum group size is a bit contradictory. The option details say the tour runs with 4 to 20 people, but the cancellation policy says it's canceled with fewer than 5. If you're booking as one or two people, I wouldn't bet the whole trip on it.

It has real strengths, too. The page price starts at NT$11,608 (about US$365; this is the price on Klook's Taiwan site when I checked), and the page says it covers all admission fees and experiences, all meals and transport, with one night at a four-star sea-view hotel and the Yeosu Marine Cable Car listed under inclusions. One small thing to watch: the inclusions also list admission to Sunshine Studio in Nonsan, even though the tour never goes to Nonsan. I'd ask about that before booking.

So my advice became this: the tour suits people who already plan an extra night in Yeosu, can get five friends together, and care more about Suncheon Bay than the fair. If the fair is the whole point of your trip, it won't help.

Doing the Math: US$58 on Your Own vs NT$11,608 (US$365) on the Tour

You can't compare the two numbers directly, because they cover different things. So I laid them out in one table:

If you're one or two people and the fair is the goal, plan it yourself. Out of the NT$9,612 (US$302) difference, what you'll pay on your own is one night's stay and a few meals, and for the hotel, pick one close to a shuttle stop.

If you're five or more and the fair is just a stop along the way, take the tour, but you'll need to add the night before in Yeosu and half a day at the fair yourself.

If you want both, I'd split them up: do Yeosu on your own over two days, and set aside another day for a Suncheon day tour from Busan. Klook's Suncheon day tour from Busan lists NT$2,041 (about US$64) on the page, with three pickup points: Haeundae Station Exit 7 at 08:00, Seomyeon Station Exit 12 at 08:40, and Busan Station Exit 3 at 09:00. It gets back to Busan Station at 20:00 and includes admission, a guide speaking Chinese, English and Japanese, and transfers, and the page shows a 4.8 rating, 21 reviews and more than 400 people booked. The two together come to about NT$4,037 (US$127), plus one night in Yeosu, and you get to see both the fair and Suncheon Bay.

Fitting It into 6 Days on the South Coast: In and Out of Busan, Yeosu in the Middle

Here's how I'd lay out the whole trip, one thing a day, no rushing:

Day 1: fly into Busan. After landing, just check in and eat.

Day 5: Suncheon day tour from Busan. The route doubles back west, which looks like a waste, but on a day tour someone else drives and there are three pickup points, which is easier than making another transfer yourself.

Day 6: fly home from Busan.

FAQ

Q1: Can you see the Yeosu World Island Fair in one day?

The Main Venue, yes. It opens at 10:00, last entry is 20:00 and it closes at 21:00, and the official site says an exit stamp lets you back in. The Gaedo and Geumodo sub-venues need a ferry and are open until 18:00, so if you want to go, plan a separate day.

Q2: Can you do Yeosu as a day trip from Busan?

On the timetable, yes. The 07:30 Premium bus from Sasang reaches Yeosu at 09:57, and the last bus back from Yeosu to Sasang leaves at 20:00 and arrives at 22:33. But that only gives you until about 19:00 at the Main Venue, and you still have to allow time for the shuttle back to the bus terminal. I wouldn't plan it this way on a first visit.

Q3: Do I need to buy fair tickets online in advance?

Not necessarily. Regular tickets are sold on site, and the official site also links to online sales on NOL World (Interpark), with English and Japanese pages. For refunds, the official site says unused tickets can be fully refunded before the fair ends, but multiple tickets bought together on site can't be partially refunded.
