2026 Australia & New Zealand Guide: Top 5 Routes + Promo Codes

Australia & New Zealand: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Trip

Australia and New Zealand are nothing like Southeast Asia. Southeast Asia is "cheap, easy, spontaneous." Oceania is "breathtaking, healing, and unforgettable."

The Sydney Opera House bathed in sunset light, New Zealand's South Island glaciers under a canopy of stars, these aren't scenes you can fully absorb on YouTube. You have to stand there in person to feel the impact.

Yes, prices in Australia and NZ aren't cheap, but they're not prohibitively expensive either. My last 7-day/6-night Sydney trip, including flights, accommodation, and tickets, came to about TWD 55,000 (~USD 1,750) per person. With 1stCoupon promo codes for bookings, you can save another 10-15%.

This guide is my real-world Oceania experience, designed to help you avoid every tourist trap.

Customs & Biosecurity: Extremely Strict!

Australia and New Zealand have some of the strictest biosecurity laws in the world. Do NOT bring:

  • Meat products (including meat seasoning in instant noodles!)
  • Eggs and egg products
  • Fresh fruit
  • Seeds and honey
  • Any animal or plant products

Costly lesson: A friend brought a pack of Taiwanese instant noodles to New Zealand (containing a meat seasoning packet) and got fined NZD 400 (~USD 240). Don't risk it! If unsure whether something is allowed, tick "Yes" on the declaration form and go through the red channel. Declaring a prohibited item means it gets confiscated; NOT declaring it means a massive fine.

Australia Guide: Sydney & Melbourne

Sydney

Sydney Opera House & Circular Quay Don't just take photos from outside! Take the ferry: tap your Opal Card or contactless credit card. Routes F3 or F4 to Manly Beach offer the most stunning angle looking back at the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, and it's incredibly cheap.

Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk One of the world's most beautiful coastal walks. Starting from Bondi Beach, walk along the cliffs to Coogee, about 6 km total. Along the way you'll find sweeping Pacific Ocean views and the wave-battered Icebergs Pool (must-photograph).

Blue Mountains National Park About 2 hours from Sydney CBD. Named for the blue haze created by eucalyptus oil vapor refracting sunlight.

  • Scenic World: Three types of cable cars. The Railway is the world's steepest passenger railway (52-degree incline), the descent feels almost vertical and is absolutely thrilling
  • Booking Scenic World combo tickets on Klook discount overview is typically 10-15% cheaper than on-site

Melbourne

Great Ocean Road A 243 km coastal highway with the Twelve Apostles as the crown jewel. Strongly recommend self-driving or joining a day tour (it's a long drive; not ideal for a same-day return).

OptionPros/ConsCost
Self-driveHigh flexibility, but left-hand driving takes adjustment~AUD 60-100/day rental
Day tourEasy, includes guide commentaryAUD 100-180/person
Overnight tripBest option, no rushingVaries

Coffee Culture Melbourne's coffee is world-class. Skip the chains and find independent cafes in the laneways. Wander into the Laneways district and you literally cannot go wrong.

New Zealand Guide: South Island & North Island

South Island: Jaw-Dropping Natural Landscapes

Queenstown The adventure capital of the world. If you could only bungee jump or skydive in one place on earth, make it here.

ActivityPrice (NZD)~TWDThrill Level
Bungee jumping2053,85010/10
Skydiving (15,000 ft)4999,40010/10
Jet boat1593,0008/10
Paragliding2494,7007/10

Milford Sound New Zealand's signature attraction. Cruise between towering cliffs with waterfalls plunging from above, dolphins and seals swimming alongside the boat.

Heads up: Milford Sound is a 4-hour drive one way from Queenstown. I recommend joining a day tour with return transport included, driving that mountain road yourself is exhausting and dangerous after dark.

Lake Tekapo One of the world's best stargazing spots. The Church of the Good Shepherd with the Milky Way overhead produces desktop-wallpaper-quality photos effortlessly.

North Island

Auckland: New Zealand's largest city, with the Sky Tower as its landmark. The CBD is compact, 1-2 days is enough.

Rotorua: Geothermal wonders and Maori culture. See geysers, bubbling mud pools, and experience traditional Maori Hangi cooking.

South Island Self-Driving Tips

Self-driving the South Island is the best way to experience New Zealand, but keep these in mind:

  1. Drive on the left: The biggest challenge. Just remember to stay away from the center line
  2. Roundabouts: Give way to traffic from the right
  3. One-lane bridges: Very common! Check signage and let oncoming traffic pass first
  4. Don't drive after dark: Rural roads have no streetlights and wildlife may be on the road
  5. Gas stations are sparse: Confirm where the next gas station is before you leave

Sun Protection & Outdoor Safety

The ozone layer above Australia and NZ is thinner, making UV intensity 2-3x stronger than most of Asia.

  • SPF50+ sunscreen is absolutely essential
  • Wear a hat and sunglasses
  • Reapply every 2 hours during outdoor activities
  • You will get sunburned and peeling within 30 minutes without sunscreen, this is not an exaggeration

Also, inland Australia has extremely persistent flies. If visiting Uluru or other outback areas, consider buying a fly net for your face.

Accommodation Strategy

Oceania has plenty of accommodation options, but prices run high. Here's how to save:

FAQ

Q: Australia or New Zealand, which do you recommend? A: Depends on what you want. For a mix of urban and nature, pick Australia. For pure, epic natural scenery, pick New Zealand. If you have 14+ days, do both.

Q: How do I get a visa? A: For Australia, apply for an ETA via the official "Australian ETA" app. For New Zealand, apply for NZeTA + IVL via the official "NZeTA" app (cheaper and faster than the website).

Q: What if I can't drive on the left? A: Self-driving is strongly recommended for NZ South Island. If you really can't manage it, join group tours, but you'll lose a lot of flexibility. For Australia, Sydney and Melbourne CBDs are fine with public transit.

Q: Is it good for kids? A: Yes, but Oceania trips tend to involve long walks and drives, which may be tough for very young children. I'd recommend ages 6+. Taronga Zoo in Sydney and Phillip Island penguins in Melbourne are top family picks.

Q: Best time to visit? A: Southern Hemisphere spring/summer is Oct-Apr. Dec-Feb is peak summer holiday season (highest prices). Sep-Nov and Mar-Apr offer the best value.
