Tokyo Day Trip Guide 2026: Karuizawa, Kamakura, Mt. Fuji, Nikko

Stop spending all your Tokyo time in Shibuya and Shinjuku! I fly to Tokyo at least twice a year, and honestly, the city center gets old by the third visit. The day trips are what keep pulling me back — Karuizawa's crisp mountain air, Kamakura's ocean breeze, Lake Kawaguchi's mirror reflection of Mt. Fuji, Nikko's centuries-old shrines. Every one of them is just 1 to 2 hours from Tokyo. That's day-trip paradise.
This guide covers four classic routes I've run countless times, each with the actual fares I paid, hour-by-hour schedules, and the money-saving tricks I learned the hard way. Pick one, follow along, and you're set.
Before you go: JR Tokyo Wide Pass essentials
Before I get into the routes, let me introduce the ultimate money-saver — the JR Tokyo Wide Pass.
The 2026 price is ¥16,000 for adults, ¥8,000 for children, valid for 3 consecutive days of unlimited travel on JR East Shinkansen and limited express trains. Coverage includes Karuizawa, Nikko, Lake Kawaguchi, Echigo-Yuzawa, Atami, and more.
Here's my real-world cost breakdown:
| Route | One-way fare | Round trip |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo → Karuizawa (Hokuriku Shinkansen) | ¥5,490–6,020 | ¥10,980–12,040 |
| Tokyo → Nikko (Tobu Limited Express) | ~¥2,800 | ~¥5,600 |
| Shinjuku → Kawaguchiko (Fuji Excursion) | ~¥4,130 | ~¥8,260 |
A single Karuizawa round trip alone runs over ¥11,000. If you hit two or more destinations in three days, this pass saves you thousands. My personal record: Karuizawa + Kawaguchiko in three days, which would have cost over ¥19,000 paid à la carte. The pass saved me ¥3,000.
Where to buy: JR East Travel Service Centers at Narita Airport, Haneda Airport, or Tokyo Station. You can also pre-book on Klook or KKday and skip the airport queue at pickup.
Route 1: Karuizawa day trip — perfect mountain getaway
Getting there and fares
Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station or Ueno Station, about 60–70 minutes direct to Karuizawa.
| Departure | Reserved seat | Non-reserved |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo Station | ¥6,020 | ¥5,490 |
| Ueno Station | ¥5,610 | ¥5,280 |
Non-reserved seats have always been fine for me — trains before 8 AM usually have plenty of open seats. On weekends or peak season, book a reserved seat for peace of mind.
Recommended itinerary
08:00 Depart Tokyo Station (Hokuriku Shinkansen, non-reserved)
09:10 Arrive at Karuizawa Station, rent a bicycle (¥700/day, absurdly cheap)
09:30 Cycle to Kumoba Pond — my favorite spot in Karuizawa! The lake reflects the surrounding trees beautifully in every season; spring greens and autumn reds are unreal. About 15 minutes from the station along a gorgeous tree-lined road.
10:30 Head to Old Karuizawa Ginza Street — a charming shopping street packed with jam shops, bakeries, and cafés. My must-buys: Sawaya jam and Mikado Coffee's mocha soft serve (just ¥400).
12:00 Lunch at a soba restaurant or one of the surprisingly good French restaurants on Ginza Street.
13:30 Cycle to Harunire Terrace — a Hoshino Resorts complex with wooden buildings strung along a stream. Maruyama Coffee and Sonmin Shokudo are my regulars.
15:30 Head to Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza — one of Japan's largest outlets with over 200 stores. I scored a North Face jacket at nearly 50% off last time, saving close to ¥10,000.
18:00 Shinkansen back to Tokyo
Money-saving tips
- The JR Tokyo Wide Pass covers Karuizawa; best value when paired with another day trip in the same 3-day window
- Bicycles beat buses, just ¥700/day and way more freedom
- At the outlet, grab the foreign tourist discount coupon at the information center for an extra 10% off at select brands
- Check 1stCoupon for Klook and KKday codes — Shinkansen tickets and tours often stack with promo codes
Route 2: Kamakura + Enoshima day trip — Slam Dunk pilgrimage
Getting there and fares
Take the Odakyu Line from Shinjuku Station to Kamakura, about 1 hour direct, ¥950 one-way.
The best ticket is the Enoshima-Kamakura Free Pass: ¥1,640 for adults, ¥430 for children. Includes the Odakyu round trip from Shinjuku plus unlimited Enoden rides for one day.
There's also an Enoden 1-Day Pass: ¥800 for adults, ¥400 for children. Get this one if you're already in Kamakura.
| Ticket | Adult price | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Enoshima-Kamakura Free Pass | ¥1,640 | Shinjuku round trip + Enoden 1-day |
| Enoden 1-Day Pass | ¥800 | Enoden all lines, 1 day |
| Odakyu one-way (Shinjuku→Kamakura) | ¥950 | One-way only |
Recommended itinerary
08:30 Depart Shinjuku (Odakyu Line, using the Free Pass)
09:30 Arrive at Kamakura Station. Start with Komachi-dori Shopping Street — the approach to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu lined with shops selling senbei, matcha sweets, and shirasu (whitebait) rice bowls. My personal favorite is the half-moon cake from Kamakura Goro Honten.
10:30 Tsurugaoka Hachimangu — Kamakura's most important shrine. Red torii gates and towering trees create a magnificent atmosphere. Plan about 30 minutes for a visit.
11:30 Take the Enoden to Hase Station, then walk to Kotoku-in (Great Buddha) — admission just ¥300. The 13.35-meter outdoor bronze Buddha is iconic. You can step inside the Buddha for ¥50, very cool!
12:30 Lunch near Hase Station. Try the local shirasu (whitebait) rice bowl, Kamakura's signature dish.
13:30 Take the Enoden to Kamakurakoko-mae Station — this is THE iconic railway crossing from the Slam Dunk anime opening! The platform itself looks straight out at the ocean. Photo crowds are huge here, so weekdays are recommended.
14:30 Continue on the Enoden to Enoshima — cross the long bridge to the island, climb up to the Sea Candle observation tower for panoramic ocean views. Island seafood donburi and fried seafood skewers are must-eats.
17:00 Head back to Shinjuku from Enoshima
Money-saving tips
- The Enoshima-Kamakura Free Pass is essentially a must-buy — saves at least ¥500 vs. buying separately
- Great Buddha admission is only ¥300, incredible value for a UNESCO-tier landmark
- KKday and Klook offer guided Kamakura day tours if you'd rather skip the route planning. Check 1stCoupon for codes — usually a few hundred yen knocked off
Route 3: Mt. Fuji + Lake Kawaguchi day trip — best views of Mt. Fuji
Getting there and fares
The recommended option is the Fuji Excursion limited express from Shinjuku direct to Kawaguchiko, about 2 hours, reserved seat ~¥4,130.
This train is extremely popular with limited seating. I missed the tickets once and had to take local trains with a transfer, adding nearly an hour. Book one month ahead via JR East's e-Ticket system.
The alternative is the highway bus from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko, about 1 hour 45 minutes, ~¥2,200 — cheaper but with traffic risk.
| Transport | Time | Cost (one-way) |
|---|---|---|
| Fuji Excursion (from Shinjuku) | ~2 hours | ~¥4,130 |
| Highway Bus (from Shinjuku) | ~1h 45m | ~¥2,200 |
| JR Tokyo Wide Pass | Same as Fuji Excursion | Included in ¥16,000 |
Recommended itinerary
07:30 Depart Shinjuku on the Fuji Excursion (leave early — morning gives the clearest Fuji views!)
09:30 Arrive at Kawaguchiko Station
10:00 Take the Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway (Tenjo-Yama Park) — round trip ¥1,000 adults, ¥500 children. Just 3 minutes to the summit with a 180-degree panoramic view. On clear days, Fuji is right in your face — photos can't capture it. Key tip: Fuji often gets covered by clouds after noon, so schedule the ropeway for the morning!
11:00 Take a Lake Kawaguchi sightseeing boat for Fuji reflections on the water, about 20 minutes per trip.
12:00 Head to Oshino Hakkai (bus ~25 min) — eight crystal-clear ponds formed by Mt. Fuji's snowmelt. The water is an unreal shade of blue. Great photo spot at the watermill cottage. Plenty of small shops sell grilled dango and tofu sweets here.
14:00 Back to Kawaguchiko Station for lunch. Try Fudo Chaya's "houtou" (ほうとう) — local miso-stewed flat noodle soup, packed with vegetables, super warming.
15:30 If time allows, stroll along Oishi Park by the lakeside. Lavender season (June-July) is peak.
17:00 Fuji Excursion back to Shinjuku
Money-saving tips
- The JR Tokyo Wide Pass covers the Fuji Excursion — a must-buy if you're hitting other day trips
- Mt. Fuji Ropeway tickets are sometimes 10% off on Klook
- Oshino Hakkai is completely free, no admission charged
- Lake Kawaguchi Retro Bus has a 1-day pass (¥1,500 for adults) that's great if you're hitting multiple stops
Route 4: Nikko day trip — World Heritage stunner
Getting there and fares
Take the Tobu Railway limited express from Asakusa Station to Tobu-Nikko, about 2 hours. Limited express surcharge ~¥2,800.
The pick is the Nikko World Heritage Area Pass: ¥3,000 for adults, ¥1,500 for children. Includes the Asakusa round trip (excluding limited express surcharge) and Nikko area buses. Add the limited express surcharge (~¥1,340) if you want the fast train.
| Ticket | Adult price | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Nikko World Heritage Area Pass | ¥3,000 | Asakusa round trip + Nikko buses |
| Limited Express Surcharge (add-on) | ~¥1,340 | Asakusa→Tobu-Nikko express |
| JR Tokyo Wide Pass | ¥16,000 (3-day) | Includes JR Nikko Line |
Recommended itinerary
07:30 Depart Asakusa on the Tobu limited express (start early — Nikko's attractions are spread out)
09:30 Arrive at Tobu-Nikko Station
10:00 Head straight to Toshogu Shrine — the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in 1617. Admission ¥1,300. The carved details are mind-blowing; most famous are the "Three Wise Monkeys" (see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil) and the "Sleeping Cat." I was genuinely stunned by the sheer opulence on my first visit.
12:00 Lunch near Toshogu. Try Nikko yuba (tofu skin) — a local specialty with a texture completely different from the regular tofu skin you'd expect.
13:00 Bus to Lake Chuzenji (~45 min, via the famous Irohazaka switchbacks — 48 hairpin turns!)
13:50 Arrive at Lake Chuzenji. Visit Kegon Falls — one of Japan's three great waterfalls with a 97-meter drop. Take the elevator down to the observation deck (¥570) for an up-close experience. When water volume is high, the roar is deafening; in winter, the frozen falls are equally spectacular.
15:00 Stroll along Lake Chuzenji — crystal-clear water with Mount Nantai in the background. The autumn foliage here is absolutely stunning.
16:30 Bus back to Tobu-Nikko Station
17:00 Limited express back to Asakusa
Money-saving tips
- The Nikko World Heritage Area Pass + limited express surcharge (~¥4,340 total) is the most economical combo for round-trip transport and Nikko buses
- Toshogu's ¥1,300 admission has no discounts, but it's absolutely worth every yen
- With the JR Tokyo Wide Pass, ride JR to Utsunomiya then transfer to the JR Nikko Line — completely free
- Klook and KKday offer guided Nikko day tours with bus included. Pair with Klook Skyliner Narita Express tickets if you're going same-day from Narita, and check 1stCoupon for codes first

Money-saving tips master list
Transport savings
- The JR Tokyo Wide Pass is king: ¥16,000 for 3 days, covering Karuizawa, Kawaguchiko, and Nikko routes
- Kamakura: use the Odakyu Free Pass — ¥1,640 covers the Shinjuku round trip plus Enoden all day
- Buy tickets online ahead of time: Pre-book through Klook or KKday to skip queues, sometimes with early-bird discounts
Activity savings
- Klook has 191 coupons, KKday has 111 — always check 1stCoupon Klook deals for the latest codes before departure
- Guided day tours vs. DIY: For single destinations, guided tours often include transport and a guide and aren't necessarily more expensive. Especially for Kawaguchiko and Nikko, tours save the hassle of fighting for Fuji Excursion tickets and waiting for buses
- Karuizawa Outlet: grab the foreign tourist discount coupon for an extra 10% off at select stores
Accommodation savings
If you want to cover multiple routes, stay near Tokyo Station or Ueno Station for easy Shinkansen and limited-express access. Book hotels through Agoda Japan deals (15% off) or Trip.com LINE Bank Japan/Korea promo and stack promo codes from 1stCoupon.
When NOT to do a Tokyo daytrip
Honestly, I run these routes every year on my Tokyo trips, but this kind of itinerary isn't for everyone. There are a few situations where I'd talk you out of it:
- You only have a 3-day Tokyo trip: Subtract airport transfers and jet lag, and a day trip means writing off central Tokyo entirely. I don't recommend this for first-time visitors — the city itself still has more food and fun than three days can hold.
- Pre-school kids without a stroller: Karuizawa and Nikko have long walks between attractions. Kids melt down, parents melt down, and the whole day turns into emotional warfare.
- Shoestring budgets: The JR Tokyo Wide Pass alone is ¥16,000. If you don't break even, you'll wish you'd just bought ¥800 city day passes instead. Budget travelers struggle to come out ahead here.
- Wrong season for Mt. Fuji: June through August, Fuji is often hidden behind clouds. Lake Kawaguchi without the mountain is just a lake. I got burned on this last summer. If your trip hinges on a Fuji photo, plan around the cloud season.
One more heads up: Nikko's roads ice over in winter. If you're not used to driving or walking on snow, switch to a spring or autumn visit instead.
FAQ
Q1: Which route is best for first-timers?
I'd point you to Kamakura + Enoshima! Simplest transport (one Enoden line handles everything), lowest cost (the pass is just ¥1,640), dense attractions with no rushing, and the Slam Dunk railway crossing genuinely hits.
Q2: Is the JR Tokyo Wide Pass worth it?
If you'll visit two or more day-trip destinations within three days, absolutely. A Tokyo-Karuizawa round trip alone costs ¥11,000, so the ¥16,000 pass makes the second trip nearly free. Skip it if you're only going to Kamakura — it's not in the pass's value range.
Q3: Which route is best with kids?
Kawaguchiko is most family-friendly! The Mt. Fuji ropeway thrills kids, the crystal pools at Oshino Hakkai fascinate them, and the Kawaguchiko area is flat and stroller-friendly.
Q4: Can I do two routes in one day?
Generally not recommended. Each route needs 8–10 hours to enjoy properly. In theory, you could do "half-day Kamakura + half-day Karuizawa," but you'd spend the whole time rushing and enjoy nothing.
Q5: What's the best season to go?
- Spring (March-April): Kamakura cherry blossoms, Kawaguchiko sakura with Fuji backdrop
- Summer (July-August): Karuizawa for the cool mountain retreat, Kawaguchiko lavender season
- Autumn (October-November): Nikko and Karuizawa offer some of Japan's finest autumn foliage
- Winter (December-February): Kawaguchiko's snow-capped Fuji is most dramatic, Nikko's frozen Kegon Falls
