Chifeng Street: Taipei's Seongsu-dong? My 5-Cafe Walking Map 2026

Chifeng Street: Taipei's Seongsu-dong? My 5-Cafe Walking Map 2026

Let me give you the punchline first.

If you want to explain Chifeng Street to a Korean friend, the fastest way is "Taipei's version of Seongsu-dong."

I didn't invent that comparison. Last time I showed my friend Ji-hye around (she's a curator based in Seoul who came to Taipei for work), the first thing she said after we finished walking the whole street was "this is a mini Seongsu-dong." Then she came back on her own twice over the next two days.

That reaction got me serious about drawing a map. What follows is the 5-cafe strolling route I worked out over a whole Thursday afternoon (weekdays only, to dodge the weekend crush), walking from 2pm to 6pm. I paired each spot with a Seongsu-dong equivalent so Korean visitors can anchor the experience to something they already know.

Why Chifeng Street equals Taipei's Seongsu-dong

Three things overlap:

  1. From factory district to creative strip. Chifeng Street used to be Taipei's ironworking alley (old locals still call it the blacksmith lane); Seongsu-dong was a factory and leather-processing zone. Both tipped into indie-creative territory after roughly 2015.
  2. Old buildings + new cafes. Urban renewal never leveled the old houses here, so cafes grow straight out of 50- to 80-year-old structures. The "half-upper-floor" conversions tucked in Chifeng's side alleys follow the exact same logic as Seongsu-dong's warehouse reworks like Daelim Changgo and Onion.
  3. Crazy density of small shops. Chifeng Street packs 30+ independent cafes inside a 400-meter radius. Seongsu-dong's cafe street is slightly denser, but Chifeng wins on diversity: Taiwan-style old townhouses, Showa-era Japanese aesthetics, Nordic minimalism, all within a block of each other.

The difference? Chifeng is narrower. Seongsu-dong's main cafe belt stretches along Exits 2 and 4 of Seongsu Station with open space; Chifeng is a tangle of side alleys, where a single corner can hide three cafes with completely different vibes. For anyone who cares about photos, that density hits harder than Seongsu-dong's spread.

Ji-hye booked a Zhongshan boutique hotel through Trip.com on her first trip — NT$3,200 per night — and stacked the Trip.com Mega Bank cardholder 7% off (MEGA26H), netting roughly NT$224 off per night. 8 minutes' walk from the top of Chifeng Street, which set the entire pace of the trip.

The walking route (2pm to 6pm)

Getting there: take the Taipei MRT to Zhongshan Station, use Exit 5, turn right, cross the FamilyMart intersection, and you're at the mouth of Chifeng Street. From here, head north.

The 5 cafes below are listed in the order I actually walked them. If you want to pair this afternoon walk with a morning day-trip (Jiufen, Pingxi, Yehliu), I usually book the NT$1,200 to NT$1,800 tickets a day ahead with the KKday Taiwan products Friday 7% off (KKTW95EX) so the timing lines up — morning out of town, back in Zhongshan by 1:30pm, coffees rolling at 2pm.

Stop 1: Hojan Coffee, matched with Seongsu-dong's Or.er

Address: No. 16, Lane 41, Chifeng St, Datong District, Taipei Format: Showa-era Japanese aesthetic, dark-roast pour-over, vinyl records, no time limit Average spend: NT$220 to NT$320

The second I pushed the wooden door open, I genuinely thought I'd teleported to a Kyoto side alley. This is my favorite stop on the whole route, no contest.

Seongsu-dong equivalent: Or.er. Both are the kind of cafe where you go quiet the moment you step inside, both lean hard into pour-over single-origin, both ride high ceilings and natural light as the main decor element. The difference is that Or.er is Nordic-minimalist, while Hojan is Showa-Japan moody.

One detail worth flagging: they only serve pour-over, no espresso machine in the house. If your friend's coffee vocabulary tops out at lattes and cappuccinos, there's a brief moment of confusion. When Ji-hye and I came in, she ordered a Yirgacheffe as her first cup, and the moment the pour-over hit the table, she asked the owner which roaster it came from.

Suggested stay: 50 to 60 minutes (one slow cup, around two full vinyl flips).

Stop 2: Twin Brothers Coffee, matched with Seongsu-dong's LMC

Address: No. 23, Lane 39, Chifeng St, Datong District, Taipei Format: Cinnamon roll specialist, light-roast coffee, mostly takeaway Average spend: NT$180 to NT$260

Voted by Taiwanese magazines as one of the best cinnamon rolls in Taipei. Small daily batches, irregular drop times, closes the moment they sell out. Caramel sauce drizzled on a warm roll, topped with walnuts, NT$130 per piece.

I got burned twice trying. First visit, I arrived at 3pm and they'd cleared out; second time, 2:15pm and only four rolls left. If you want one, show up early. ⚠️ Heads up: Twin Brothers cinnamon rolls regularly sell out by 3pm on weekends — real risk of an empty trip if you arrive late.

Seongsu-dong equivalent: LMC. Both combine "queue-worthy specialty item + serious coffee." LMC is famous in Seoul for its cinnamon roll + lemon curd combo; Twin Brothers pulls crowds on the cinnamon roll alone.

Suggested stay: 15 to 25 minutes (takeaway is the play).

Stop 3: Qianri Coffee Supply, matched with Seongsu-dong's Biit

Address: 2F, No. 23, Lane 49, Chifeng St, Datong District, Taipei Format: Reservation-only, flat NT$350 minimum (your choice of 3 drinks) Average spend: NT$350 and up

The reservation-only model is rare in Taipei but totally normal in Korea (a lot of Seongsu-dong's hot cafes run bookings). Qianri is tucked up on the second floor, seats a handful of groups per week, and runs on wood + warm yellow lighting + low-volume jazz.

Seongsu-dong equivalent: Biit. Both are "second floor + quiet + wood-toned" escape cafes. The one difference is Qianri's fixed NT$350 for 3 drinks has no direct parallel in Seoul, though it lines up with the "1 drink + 1 cake minimum" spots you find in Seochon.

Suggested stay: 90+ minutes (you're paying 350 for 3 drinks, don't rush).

Stop 4: The COACH Coffee Shop concept store, matched with Seongsu-dong's Dior Seongsu

Address: No. 3, Lane 3, Chifeng St, Datong District, Taipei Format: Century-old house renovation, luxury-brand crossover cafe Average spend: NT$220 to NT$380

Taiwan's first COACH cafe opened here late 2024. Coffee on the ground floor, brand merchandise display upstairs. Two minutes from MRT Zhongshan Station Exit 4. The exterior is a standalone century-old house; the interior is industrial-modern with COACH leather detailing woven in.

Seongsu-dong equivalent: Dior Seongsu / Tamburins Seongsu. Both are the textbook "luxury brand uses cafe as brand showroom, uses Instagram as funnel" play. Dior Seongsu spent more on the buildout (the whole white glass-box structure), but COACH Chifeng is more grounded, repurposing an old Taipei townhouse as a brand-experience space.

Suggested stay: 30 to 40 minutes (one drink, one loop upstairs, no obligation to buy, but the photos work).

Stop 5: Waha Cafe, matched with the Seongsu-dong Daelim Changgo vibe

Address: 1F, No. 3, Lane 47, Chifeng St, Datong District, Taipei Format: Old-house conversion, terrazzo floors, red brick, hidden-gem feel Average spend: NT$200 to NT$280

Saved for last. This one sits deep in Lane 47, inside a traditional old townhouse: terrazzo floors, red brick walls, nostalgic green plants at the entrance. This is the secret cafe I bring out-of-town friends to.

Seongsu-dong equivalent: the spirit of Daelim Changgo. Both share the "large space + vintage materials + nostalgic atmosphere" formula. Daelim Changgo is a full-scale warehouse; Waha is a small house. Different scale, same aesthetic. Korean friends usually react with "you can't find this in Seoul." Seoul's old-house renovations mostly go full modern-minimalist, while Chifeng's "keep the bones + add greenery" approach is actually harder to find there.

Suggested stay: 40 to 50 minutes.

4-hour walking route at a glance

If it's your first time booking any Taiwan attractions through a platform, the Klook first purchase 10% off (APP10TW, max TWD 100) covers the morning ticket layer cleanly — I usually point first-time visitors at it before they touch the schedule below.

How to slot Chifeng Street into a Korean friend's Taipei trip

Honestly, if they're doing 4 days / 3 nights in Taipei, Day 3 afternoon is the sweet spot.

Suggested flow:

  • Morning: brunch around Yongkang Street or Shida
  • Afternoon: 4-hour Chifeng walk + coffee pilgrimage
  • Evening: izakaya-style dinner near Zhongshan Station, or Qingguang night market

For the hotel, anywhere around Zhongshan Station is the most efficient base. 8 minutes from a Zhongshan District hotel to the start of Chifeng Street, 5 minutes to The COACH Coffee Shop, no taxis needed all day. Korean travelers book Taipei hotels through Trip.com more than any other platform, so CTBC cardholders should stack the Trip.com CTBC cardholder 7% off (CTBC26H) at checkout — it's the cleanest stack on Zhongshan boutique inventory.

FAQ

Q1: Is Chifeng Street worth it on a weekend? Not really. By 3pm on Saturday, Twin Brothers has cleared out, Hojan is full with a wait. I ran the test across three visits (Thursday, Saturday, Sunday), and Thursday at 2pm delivered the best experience curve.

Q2: Is 5 cafes in one afternoon too many? Depends on your caffeine tolerance. A single pour-over runs 80 to 120mg of caffeine; 5 cups puts you at 500mg (the adult daily cap is 400mg), and you might not sleep that night. My recommendation is 3 pour-overs + 2 tea / light-roast espresso drinks, not 5 back-to-back concentrated cups.

Q3: Zhongshan Station Exit 4 vs Exit 5, which is closer? Exit 4 is closest to The COACH Coffee Shop (2 minutes); Exit 5 is near Twin Brothers and Hojan (3 to 5 minutes). My suggested flow is start from Exit 5, work north, finish at Exit 4. The route flows naturally.

Q4: My Korean friend doesn't speak Chinese. Can they order in English? Among the 5, Hojan, Qianri, and The COACH all have full English menus; Twin Brothers works with pointing and body language; Waha has limited English but the owner handles basic conversation. The zero-stress picks are The COACH (international brand) and Hojan (the owner has deep ties to the coffee community and speaks English fluently).

Q5: Can I combine this route with other itineraries? Yes. 8 minutes north of Chifeng Street is Shuanglian Station, 10 minutes east gets you to Qingguang, 15 minutes west lands you in Dadaocheng. My most-recommended pairing is Chifeng Street in the afternoon → dinner at Yongle Market in Dadaocheng for pork rib broth. Seamless handoff.
